How to Use A Pendulum

By Debbora Wiles

The use of the pendulum as an energy reading device dates back almost to the origins of mankind. Some believe that the pendulum began as a carpenter’s tool—in which a weighted bead is tied to the end of a sting and allowed to hang free. This tool today is called a “plumb bob” and is used for hanging wall paper and other jobs where the user wants things to hang or built things straight in a vertical line. Plumb bob’s are even depicted in drawings in ancient Egyptian art.

From these humble origins, the pendulum has spread into many other areas of use and the name has changed to according to the many tasks they do. Likely in handling it as a leveling tool, the ancient builder also noted that the simple pendulum was sensitive to all energy fields. The next ancient use of the pendulum came as a dowsing device when it was discovered that certain people could locate water underground by watching the motion of a pendulum. Finding water in Egypt would be magic indeed! Later the natural properties of the pendulum expanded to include medical diagnostics, a divination tool and a communication device with nonphysical entities. The properties of the pendulum have not changed in thousands of years, yet this simple device is as powerful today as it was at the dawn of time.

How the Pendulum Works

With a simple string and any attached weight, a pendulum is naturally sensitive to the flux and movement of dynamic energy in any given area. For example, it notes tiny eddies of energy above the ground when water is present beneath it. It also notes minute changes in the energy fields near the human body and away from it. So we might call the pendulum an ultra sensitive sensor to the natural dynamic energy fields that surround all things.

The pendulum is also extremely accurate, as evidenced by the fact that you can get the same results with repeated readings, even by different people. So it’s no wonder that pendulums have stayed with us for centuries and have evolved to include so many applications in earth science, communications, healing, and in divination.

How to Make a Pendulum

You can make a pendulum with about seven inches of thread or string and any weight strong enough to pull the thread taught. That can be a heavy button, a stone, a bead or even a heavy paper clip will do in a pinch. You just tie the weight to one end of the string or thread and hold the other end in your hand and allow the other end to hang free.

People who use pendulums usually select the materials they are made from based on the specific task they intend to use the pendulum for. For example, if you intend to use a pendulum to find water, then the pendulum is usually made from a natural earthy stone like soap stone, granite or a base metal like brass or steel. This pointed pendulum is then attached to simple string or piece of flexible hemp. Usually these are made quiet heavy to withstand the elements like wind and rain with field use.

For more delicate work like working with nature spirits, doing divination work or working with human aura body fields for healing, then usually a crystal or gem stone is selected. These stones are usually suspended with a chain in either silver or gold.

The reason gem stones are chosen for this kind of work is because they hold more energy. For centuries they put gem stones inside wind-up watches because jewelers knew that the stones helped the movement of the parts, and that watches with gem stones required less winding. This is because the stones pick up energy and slowly release it. LED crystal quarts electronics are used in the same way, to hold and slowly release energy to make machines run smoother.

How to Choose Your Stone

When you select a stone to be used in either divination or healing work, you need to select one based on the FEEL of it. Think of your body as a biological machine. So when you select a stone to work with your specific energy, you need to do that by feel. Each kind of stone will have its own kind of energy—even stones made of the same material. You might say that each stone has its own energy personality and signature. The task is to find one that works well with your specific energy. The beauty and “look” of the stone should come last in your selection considerations.

Also you need to consider how you will be using the stone. If you plan on using the stone to work with the elementals in your garden, a natural clear crystal quartz stone may be best. If you are going to do healing work with your own body then you can pick almost any stone that works will with your energy. As a general rule, clear or smoky natural crystals tend to hold and send more directed energy for healing work. While darker stones tend to work better at slow release energy.

Here’s how to select your stone.

1. Pick out a few stones that draw your eye. Do not select by “favorite color” or to match clothing or your cell phone color.

Pendulum stones are always selected by compatible energy—NOT color. Once you have selected a few stones, line them up in front of you and pick them up one at a time and close your hand around them.

2. Hold the stone in your hand. How does if feel? Warm or cold?

A stone compatible with your energy should feel fairly warm. It should feel good against your skin.

3. Take a few deep breaths, close your eyes and feel the energy of the stone.

Does it feel good to you? How does your body interact with it?

In feeling the stone, you want to look for interactions between your body and the stone, does it make you feel more energized? More calm? Happy? Sad? Does it make your skin crawl? Does your heart rate go up? If you get any bad or uncomfortable “vibes” with the stone—it is not working with your energy. Set the bad vibe stones to one side and the good vibe stones to the other side.

4. Once you have a selection of “good vibe” stones in front of you retest them all again.

Purchase the stone that feels best to you generally—the one that feels best against your skin; the one that makes you feel energized, strong and happy. This will be one that works best with your energy.

How to Clean Your Stone

If you are going to use the stone in divination or healing work, you need to clean the stone first. Keep in mind that stones are very good at holding psychic energy and if 100 people have touched that stone then their psychic energy will be in it too. So in a way of looking at it, your stone is like a computer disk with data already written on it. So the first thing you want to do is erase any psychic energy in the stone. The first step is to clean it.

Once you get the stone home, take a cup of water and dissolve 1 teaspoon of kosher salt or sea salt into the water. Drop your pendulum into it and let it soak for at least an hour. If the stone is large or given to you by someone else, let it soak for 24 hours. After the soak time is done, remove the pendulum and wash it with mild soap or put it in a jewelry bath for a few minutes. Dry it on a soft cloth, your stone is now clean and it’s ready to be charged.

How to Charge a Pendulum

Charging a crystal is like programming it to work with your specific energy. This is easy to do and only takes a few minutes. Once you charge your pendulum it is wise not to let other people touch it. After all you don’t want their energy program over writing YOUR energy program. If someone does touch your pendulum after you have charged it, you need to put it back in the salt bath and start over. So this is how you change your stone.

1. Hold the pendulum in your dominate hand and close your fingers around it, palm up. Make sure all the stone, chain and/or counter weight stone is all in your hand.

2. Take several cleansing breaths and clear you mind.

3. Think about the pure radiant healing light of the universe beaming down into your hand. Let that light gather all around your hand for a minute or so.

4. Next think about pressing that energy into the pendulum—with your mind think PRESS.

5. Gather and press energy into the stone three times.

6. Your pendulum is now programmed with your energy and now ready for use.

Understanding Pendulum Movements

The pendulum has a limited number of ways it can answer questions or give data. This is one of the beautiful things about using the pendulum. The pendulum moves in response to energy fields both in the earth and within the aura bodies of all living things. Once your pendulum is programmed to your energy, it will adapt the best way to communicate with you.

The Swing: Some pendulums respond to energy by moving in a swinging motion. A positive or YES answer will cause the pendulum to move from left to right horizontal to the body. A negative or NO answer will cause the pendulum to move in a forward and back motion to and away from the body.

The Circle: Some pendulums move in circles – this is often the kind of response your pendulum will give you when you work in close to the body checking the thousands of energy fields that are close in to the body. A positive or YES answer is when the pendulum circles clockwise. A negative or NO answer is when the pendulum moves in a counterclockwise direction.

No Movement: No movement in the pendulum can mean several things. Either you were unclear about the information you wanted, or the answer is too complex for a yes or no answer. Also it could be you have assigned a task to it that it cannot communicate. In doing healing work within the body’s aura body, when the pendulum goes still it means that the energy field in that place has stopped working or is too weak to move the pendulum.

I once had my pendulum stop just over the left side of my body. I didn’t know what that meant until about four hours later when I was bowled over with pain and was taken to the ER. They diagnosed my pancreas had stopped working –a three-day hospital stay and a lot of medication got it working again. But the pendulum found it first and now I check it from time to time.

Shaking: A shaking pendulum can mean several things too. It can mean it’s getting outside interference from another energy field – which can mean you need to move to another location or put up a psychic shield. Sometimes in working with garden elementals the shaking will mean laugher. For example, I got distracted one day and asked my garden Deva if she wanted me to plant the banana tree left or right of the path. What I got was a shaking pendulum – she knew that right of the path would put in the tree in the koi pool! So she laughed at me and showed me that with a shaking pendulum.

How to Use a Pendulum

Using a pendulum is fast, easy and fun. With one well charged pendulum you can check on many things and even ask yes and no questions or and/or questions just about anywhere about anything. Here is how to use it.

1. For accurate answers always shield your self first. To learn how to make a psychic shield see the article in the PSH library: Psychic Shields for Everyday Use: http://www.psychicschoolhouse.com/library.htm

2. Take a couple of deep breaths, relax and clear your mind.

3. Form a single question in your mind that can be answered in a Yes or No way.

4. Pick up the small end your pendulum and between your forefinger and thumb and curl your hand inward so your arm and hand forms a question mark “?.”

5. Allow the weighted end of the pendulum to dangle free—leave 4 to 5 inches of space between your fingers and the weighted end of the pendulum. If you don’t have steady hands brace your elbow on a table.

6. Stop the pendulum’s motion with your other hand and clear you mind and ask your question.

7. Record the pendulum’s motion and the answers you get to each question.

8. Stop the pendulum’s motion between each question.

9. Once you are finished, drop your shield and carefully put away your pendulum.

Pendulum No-No’s

1. Pendulums work best with energy fields, aura bodies and as a communication device between you and your higher self or elementals. Pendulums are never good at answering questions regarding things like “love” and should never be employed to make major decisions in your life. They are an energy indicator tool only.

2. A cleaned and charged pendulum is a PERSONAL precision tool. After each use it should be put wrapped in a soft cloth and put away. A lipstick case or change purse works well for storing pendulums.

3. Never let anyone touch your pendulum once you have it cleaned and charged. If someone else touches it you will need to clean and recharge it before you trust the data it gives you.

4. Don’t take one reading and act on it. Test your answers several times, remember that energy changes moment by moment and day by day.

Every Day Uses for Pendulums

Consulting your pendulum can save you time, money and effort on many every day things.

1. Use it to get a count on “how many” you will need. For example, if you are going to a pot luck dinner you can ask I need to bring 12, 24 or 48 cupcakes?

2. Use it to pick out trees, plants or seeds for your house or garden. Hold the pendulum above the item and ask is this good for my garden at this time? How many will I need? If I buy this sick plant will it live? Is this pumpkin ready to pick?

3. Use the pendulum to plant everything in your yard or garden to get energy balanced plants every time.

4. Use it to test the energy in a time frame. Will Saturday be a good energy time to plan a party? Is Tuesday a good day to ask for a raise?

5. Hold the pendulum about 6 inches out from any body—if the pendulum slows down to almost nothing or stops somewhere, it’s time for a check-up.

6. Use the pendulum the same way to find problems with pets or plants.

7. Use a pendulum to check for water leaks, locate lost items or to locate things you need.

8. Use a pendulum to test foods. Some foods are good for the body, others are not, use the pendulum to test them. Is this good for my body? Am I allergic to this?

9. Use it to find base causes. Why is Fido always digging up my daisies? Is it the smell? Has he buried food there?

10. Use a pendulum to stabilize energy in meditation or in prayer.

11. A pendulum can be used to chat with crossed-over light beings (always protected.)

12. Use a pendulum to direct energy for healing or for calming a situation.

The pendulum is an extremely portable tool and will easily slip into a watch pocket, a change purse and a lipstick case and can go anywhere. It’s a wonderful tool that is sensitive, accurate and fun to use. It’s like having your own personal mini psychic at your beck and call. How great is that?
