Numberology for the New Year
By Debbora A. Wiles

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Here we are headed into a New Year of 2009 and due to the state of the economy and the events around the world I know many of you are a bit nervous about what the New Year holds for you.  Is it possible to predict what will be coming your way this year?

While no divination tool in the world will predict every little challenge in your life, you can get some accurate "running information" of how things will go for you by using art of numerology.  Since everyone's numbers are different, it's a very accurate way to get a feeling of the tone for the New Year and what development may come your way as a result of that tone.

Numerology is the science of looking at numbers and their meanings. This science was developed 2500 years ago in the sixth century by the Greek mathematician, philosopher and theorist Pythagoras.  Pythagoras believed that numbers where the very foundation of the universe and everything in it - including us.  Pythagoras believed that each number has a specific vibration "tone" like notes in a song.  Each number, note or tone can be studied alone or blended into new life songs that are specific to each time, event, birth and death in the universe.

Pythagoras showed through mathematics that once you understand the meanings of the numbers in your life it is possible to predict and alter your behavior to mellow out the challenges, excel in the positive things and expand on perks the numbers give you.  Since no two people have the same numbers each person has a different vibrationial tone to other numbers. Some of these numbers create harmony, some create challenges and others are down right toxic.

Numbers affect everything around us, we have house numbers, phone numbers, birth numbers, name numbers, car tag numbers, business numbers and the list goes on and on. So what do they mean and how can we determine what that vibration tone is doing for us or TO us?

The science of numbers begins with six primary numbers.  Two are derived from your date of birth and three are derived from the letters of your name.  And one more number which determines the general working attitude in our life.  This is a secondary number but a very important as it colors everything else through the filer of that vibration.

THE SOUL NUMBER: Describes what you FEEL inside. Other people may not see this part of you but it influences how you process the things in your life.
THE PERSONALITY NUMBER: Describes how OTHER PEOPLE perceive you.
THE POWER NAME NUMBER: Describes the strength of your name.
THE BIRTH DAY NUMBER: Describes how other people see you.
THE LIFE PATH NUMBER: Describes the life path you take in order to be happy.
THE ATTITUDE NUMBER: Describes your general attitude toward life.

How to Determine your Personal Numbers

In numerology the magic is in reducing the numbers to single digit to determine the meaning of that number.  This is accomplished by adding a string of numbers together and then reducing the results to a single digit.

For example: 2009 ADD 2 + 0 + 0 + 9 = 11 > reduce by adding 1 + 1 = 2

As you can see from above we are now in a 2 vibrationial tone year.

Now get out two sheets of paper and a pencil and let's work on your numbers.  On one side of your paper write down the 6 categories headers above, use the other sheet for your math - if you are not one to process numbers in your head.  As you get the correct numbers go back and fill in your personal numbers after each header.  You can also do this for other people in your life and compare.

The Birth Day Number

The birth day number is determined by the number of the day you were born reduced to a single digit.
To determine your birth day number, take the day you were born and write that down on your scratch paper.  If you were born on a day that is a double digit, reduce that down to a single digit.

For example if your were born on 21st that would be 2 + 1 = 3

Write this result out beside your Birth Day number.

The Life Path Number

The Life Path Number is determined by all the numbers of your date of birth date - including the year - reduced to a single digit. To do this, write down your date of birth.

For example May 1, 1952. This writes out to 5 + 1 + 1 + 9 + 5 + 2 = 23 > 2 + 3 = 5

In this birth date has a Life Path number is 5.  Write your personal life path number out beside the Life Path header.  Label this number on your scratch paper as you will need this number again later.

The Attitude Number

Add the sum of all the digits in your day and month of birth and reduce to a single digit.
May 1 - writes out to: 5 + 1 = 6

Write this number out beside Attitude Number header.

The Power of Your Name

To determine the other numbers in our header we need to take a close look at our name(s) and reduce that to numbers.  Pythagoras developed a simple system to reduce the letters in your name to numbers.  Write out your full name (at birth) on your scratch paper, also include any nick names you go by and your maiden name too.  Use the chart below to assign one number to each letter of your name.  For this exercise its best the use the name you currently go by.

The Soul Number

To get your soul number add the VOWELS in your WHOLE name at birth together and reduce that to a single digit.
For example: Debbora =  eoa  = 5+6+1 = 12 > 1 + 2 = 3

Write this number out beside the Soul Number on your header.

The Personality Number

To get this number add all the CONSONANTS in your WHOLE name together and reduce it to a single digit.

For example: Debbora = dbbr = 4+2+2+9 = 17 > 1 + 7 = 8

Add this number to your header chart beside Personality Number.

The Power Name Number

To get your power name number, look at the numbers out beside your headers.  Add the SOUL Number and the PERSONALITY number together and reduce it to a single digit.  For example if your Soul number is 3 and your Personality number is 8 it would write out this way...
3 + 8 = 11 > 1 + 1 = 2

The Vibrational Meaning of Numbers

Now that you have your headers all filled in, let's take a closer look at what those numbers mean.  As you know some numbers match you well while other numbers tend to challenge you at every turn and other numbers are just flat out toxic.

ONE - Independence

One is the number of independence, leadership and individuality.  A person with a one life path will be fiercely competitive and almost always succeed in what they do.  Their inner programs tend to run "I'm not good enough" and that can cause them to be bullies, over achievers and over demanding.  One's are quick to judge, often quick to anger and are often critical of others while at the same time loath being criticized themselves.  Here we have the business "boss," the business owner, and often times the corporate top dog. One in other numbers tends to be independent and aloof.  However, one's tend to be great leaders strong, sure footed in assuming responsibility rolls in business, life and family.  They are natural leaders. A one in other things tends offer independence, be set apart from other things and may be unique and dependable.  For example a one automobile will be dependable and give good service.  However when something goes wrong you may be looking at a odd ball problem that is hard to find and harder to fix.

Natural Match numbers: 1, 5 and 7
Compatible Numbers: 2, 3 and 9

Challenge/Toxic Numbers: 4, 6 and 8

TWO - Harmony

Two is the number of harmony, togetherness, mediation and love.  Two's are natural mediators, have a warm and snugly personality and tend to hate conflict in all forms and tend to be the "fix its" in our world.  Two's tend to have psychic abilities and are seldom leaders - as they have no natural drive to lead and their personal drivers seems only to give  love unconditionally. Most do not crave the spotlight. Two's who are pushed, used or railroaded tend to blow up, but otherwise they are good natured and a delight to have as a friend. Here we may have the stay-at-home mom, the charity worker, the dedicated worker with animals or people and the ultimate humanitarian. Two in other things tends to be interdependent on other things to function normally - like in pairs.  Here the energy of one thing drives the other in a codependent way.  For example a dishwasher with a two number may only give good service as long as you use only one kind of soap - without it it may act up.

Natural Match numbers: 2, 4 and 8
Compatible Numbers: 1, 3, 6 and 9

Challenge/Toxic Numbers: 5 and 7

THREE - Communication

Three is the number of communication, creativity and connections.  Three's tends to be creative, net workers and powerhouses in connecting people together for a cause.  They are often entertainers, actors, singers, writers, performers on all levels.  Three's tend to be on the fast track at grabbing what life has to offer or what they can manifest with it.  Sadly, this also draws many takers and user to them which they must also learn to cope with.  Three in other things tends to have need of constant communication.  A house with a three address will need constant attention for one thing or another for example.

Natural Match numbers: 3, 6 and 9
Compatible Numbers: 1, 2 and 5

Challenge/Toxic Numbers: 4, 7 and 8

FOUR - Practicality

Four's tend to be teachers, life long students and always practical and wise beyond their years.  Many people think of them as human computers or information centers.  They tend to seek the truth in things, which can sometimes rain on other people's parades as they string together facts in a the good, the bad and the ugly way.  Four's like a secure environment and fear criticism. Once the four is betrayed they find it hard to ever love, try or do business that way again.  They also tend to like the outdoors and often garden, grow their own food and work with crafts.  Four in other things may mean be set to teach or be practical.

Natural Match numbers: 2, 4 and 8
Compatible Numbers:  6 and 7

Challenge/Toxic Numbers: 1, 3, 5 and 9

FIVE - Passion

Five's tend to be adventures, explorers, freedom seekers and the life of the party people.  They tend to seek adventure and fun in everything thing they do.  They tend to marry young and may have several marriages or relationships in their lifetime.  Five's are naturally passionate people and make good investigator and detectives.  They love to travel and make good pilots, travel agents, tour guides and cruise directors.  Fives also to tend to bore super easily and like to be the center of attention for all things, when there is not enough adventure in their life they can become mentally unstable.  Five's in other things, like in a house address, may give your more adventure than you are ready to handle. For example a house address that add up to five may give you adventures in plumbing, electric wiring and heating.

Natural Match numbers: 1, 5 and 7
Compatible Numbers:  3 and 9
Neutral Numbers: 8

Challenge/Toxic Numbers: 2, 4 and 6

SIX - Nurturing

Six's are natural parents and nurturers.  If they have no children they are likely treat business associates, relatives, pets and friends like children to be nurtured and protected.  Sixes are creative and tend to be domestic diva's that strive for domestic tranquility.  They tend to be creative in art, writing and music and may be obsessive in house decorating.  Sixes tend to be people magnets as they are physically attractive and socially active.  Sadly, this also attracts harmful "strays" to them often to the detriment of the six.  Six in other number can mean a lot of work as it drawing in everything - like a DVD player with a 6 number may collect more dust and bugs than the law allows - and spend more time in the shop than in the home.  A car with a 6 number may need constant nurturing to perform well.

Natural Match numbers: 3, 6 and 9
Compatible Numbers:  2, 4 and 8

Challenge/Toxic Numbers: 1, 5 and 7

SEVEN - Mental Obsession

Seven is the number of the faith seeker.  Seven's tend to spend a lifetime questing after deeper truths and may be work-a-holics.  These may be religious leaders, psychics, gurus and other people who are on a quest to find specific data on the meaning of life.  Seven's tend to over analyze everything and are quick to leave when they feel undervalued or neglected.  Seven's tend to be loyal, honest and direct - often to a fault.  Seven's also tend to be scientists, technical writers, Doctors and computer technicians.  Seven is also considered a "magic number" as it is a central number in natural living things and psychic things.  Seven is also associated with luck as in lucky 7 due the deep wisdom associated with this number.  Other things that carry the 7 may be a slow starter, but carry good performance otherwise.

Natural Match numbers: 1, 5 and 7
Compatible Numbers:  4
Neutral Numbers: 8

Challenge/Toxic Numbers: 2, 3, 6, 8 and 9

EIGHT - Materialistic

Eights tend to be on the executive life path that drives them to create financial security with the collection of wealth.  More millionaires and high level executives fall in this number category more than any other.  Eights tend to be challenged by money and material things in all quarters.  Since the gain of material things are central to their lives, all other things tend to slide into shades of gray.  They can be cold and harsh with people and other life forms.  They have little tolerance for people who feel sorry for themselves or the underdog.  Eights tend to be bankers, stock market traders, accountants, office managers and engineers.  They tend to be a self sorting lot who is always planning for the future and tend to save a fair portion of what they earn.  Eight in other numbers is the mark of material wealth - for example an office with an address adding up to an 8 will prosper.

Natural Match numbers: 2, 4 and 8
Compatible Numbers:  5 (in business) and 6

Challenge/Toxic Numbers: 1, 3 and 9

NINE - Completion

Nine tends to be the number of the humanitarians because it contains all the other numbers.  Nines tend to have a selfless quality and work tirelessly to help humanity.  They tend to slide into work positions where they can help other people like social workers, doctors, nurses, teachers, school councilors and such.  While nines are eager to help and serve they can become cold and hard when issues arrive in the system of things to challenge their humanitarian thinking.  They are usually great with charity work, children and pets.  On the down side many tend to dwell too much in the past.  Nine in other places means the completion of things.  For example a business that carries a 9 address may not grow or change - the vibration of that numbers say's its complete.

Master Numbers 11 & 22

In going through your own personal number you may run across these master numbers.  If you were born on the 11th or 22nd it means that you came here to do something special and you will need to work your whole life at that specific challenge.  If you get these master numbers in the second stage of reducing your numbers it is a heads up that you will be called on from time to time to give your all to something.
Knowing the numbers in your life and how they affect you can explain a great deal in your personal reality.  Like that lemon car you bought may have a serial number that adds up to a 5, or that guy that never seems to work out - may have your challenge numbers.   Also repeating numbers in your life are trying to tell you something - are you listening?

Look at the numbers in your in life and you may find some surprises and better yet there is a lot you can do to change those numbers and the vibrationial energy they  create.

The Secret Language of Runes
By Dr. Charlotte Pipes

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

The term rune comes from ancient German dialects. It means mystery or secret. Each rune symbol represented a concept, like "wealth" or "fertility," and a certain amount of esoteric lore was attached to it. Runes were not originally used as letters in an alphabet. Ancient shamans used these rune symbols in their rituals in a variety of ways: to help focus their thoughts, as an aid to meditation, as a means to communicate with spirit beings, etc. Much of this communication was done solely in the mind of the shaman. The spirit beings did not have physical bodies, so they communicated with the faithful through their thoughts by using symbols.

Often, the shaman would enter into a sacred cave and draw on the cave wall a depiction of a successful hunting scene. We call this type of display imitative magick. The shaman would then summon deity to be with him in the enclosed space. He would display his artwork to the spirits, showing them pictorially what he wanted to them to bring about in real life. On behalf of the tribe, the shaman would dance, chant, and meditate in this sacred space.

Many of these ancient sacred sites still exist with their original artwork intact. These interior spaces are often very difficult to access. They are found at the end of small, twisting tunnels. They do not seem to have been created for use by the entire tribe. There is only room enough for a few individuals, the shamans, to occupy these spaces. The earliest of these cave paintings date from the Upper Paleolithic period in Europe about 30,000 years ago and the artwork reached its peak in the era spanning 17,000-11,000 years ago. The areas of greatest concentration are in southwest France and northern Spain. Sites such as Altamira in Spain and Lascaux in France are famous today. Their cave paintings depict striking images of animals during a hunt.

Alongside these cave paintings are stones depicting elaborate carvings of esoteric rune symbols. These symbols may be messages from the shaman to the spirits, or images received by the shaman as they prayed to the spirits. For ancient peoples, these paintings and symbols were not mere decoration. They were powerful, energized glyphs that held great potential for action when utilized by the trained mind of the shaman.

Unfortunately, we have no written language from this early time period to tell us the precise meanings of each symbol. However, their shamanic practices were still in use by their descendents when later civilizations invaded these areas and conquered the tribes. These new cultures did possess a written form of language and used it to chronicle their experiences. Roman historians such as Cornelius Tacitus (c. A.D. 55-117) wrote detailed accounts of the spiritual practices and beliefs of the peoples of northern Europe. He described the activities of their tribal religious leaders. Further, he described their use of prophetic symbols called runes and their frequent use of divination as a means to receive messages from deity. It was only much later that some of these original rune symbols were evolved into an alphabet of sorts, when the northern tribes encountered civilizations such the Greeks and the Romans, who used a written alphabet.

There is some interesting debate as to how these symbols were impressed upon the minds of the ancient shamans. One theory is proposed by author Nigel Pennick in his book Magical Alphabets (1992). The author discusses the effects of various stimuli on the visual cortex of the brain.

Modern neurophysiology has identified phosphenes, geometrical shapes and images that are present subconsciously in the visual cortex and neural system. These are present in all humans. They are described as entopic, being visible when the eyes are shut. They can also be seen when the consciousness is altered by some means: during meditation, in trance, or in hallucinations induced by fatigue, illness or drugs. Geometric shapes related to letters are often perceived in the early stages of trance. (Pennick 5).

Mr. Pennick's analysis seems to agree with our modern belief on the possible origin of runes. One can easily imagine a Neolithic shaman entering into a trance state, in order to communicate with the spirit world, and perceiving phosphene patterns as part of the process. The shaman would naturally come to identify these patterns or symbols with aspects of the spirit world.

Taken further, this physical origin of runes may explain the myth of the god Odin receiving the Norse runes. In Norse legend, Odin submitted himself to deprivation and agony as he hung on the world tree Yggdrasill. We find his statements in The Poetic Edda.

"I know that I hung on the windy tree
all of the nights nine,
wounded by spear and given to Odin;
myself to myself,
on that tree which no man knows,
from what roots it rises.
They dealt me no bread nor drinking horn,
I looked down,
I took up the runes.
I took them screaming,
I fell back from there."

Odin seems to be describing what we would call a shamanic experience. He speaks of a self-inflicted wound, followed by deliberate deprivation. He willingly goes through this ordeal in order to receive knowledge and wisdom. And he is rewarded handsomely-he receives the first rune symbols, which he later gives to mankind. He speaks of taking up the runes, screaming and falling back. He may be describing a dramatic return to consciousness, feeling as if he has died and been reborn. A similar feeling has been described by shamans today, who willingly enter into altered states of consciousness in order to achieve spiritual enlightenment.

As modern users of runes can attest, there is something ethereal and powerful about the runes stones, even to this day. We can still use them to help us focus our thoughts in meditation and prayer. They also make powerful conduits for our magickal work. And several symbols can be combined into one single glyph to concentrate their power. Finally, they are extremely useful as tools for divination, used in the same way as one would use Tarot cards. Somehow, these esoteric symbols can express our thoughts better than words. Runes continue to intrigue and fascinate those of us who follow "the old ways."
