Once, not long after I first started to be published, I found out that there was a writer who did a hundred-page synopsis for a hundred-and-fifty page book. Hearing that astonished me, but I was laughingly told by some other writers not to worry about it. After all, they didn't do more than twenty or thirty pages in their synopses and/or outlines.

Hmmm. Twenty or thirty pages. Back then I didn't have the nerve to mention that I never did an outline, and if I did a synopsis it was more a work of fiction than the book itself. I never had any idea where the book was going when I sat down to write; all I did was ride the flow and find out as the story was written.

From time to time I envy those who know exactly where their book is going, know just what's going to happen. It's much easier to do a book that way, following an outline instead of just writing - or typing - blindly, hoping the scenario will continue to flow. The one great benefit in writing the way I do, though, is that people seem to connect into the scene themselves through the words I write. The story "lives," and because of that it comes across as being more real and immediate.

Do I have a choice about how I'll do my writing? No, I've never found a choice. If I can "hook into" what I want to write about, I have a story. If not, I sit staring at my screen wondering if I ought to play a game before starting to work. My Crystals of Mida series started with a single idea: portrait of a barbarian. The Warrior series started with the idea of showing a real helpless female, not the paper cutout shown in other books.

The Far Side of Forever came from my having written that phrase in one of my books, a phrase I forgot about until I reread the book. I was at a convention and saw a painting in the art show. As soon as I looked at the painting I knew there was a book behind it. It took a while before I found the book, but Dead Heat is the start of the story that will relate the happenings in the painting.

That's always been the way I "get my ideas." I see or hear something that strikes a spark, and suddenly I'm "seeing" the world where the action is going on. At one point I described the arrangement as knowing there was an invisible band of static above my head. Extending an equally invisible line into the static lets me connect to what I need to see...
